A House Divided
Canon 20D Canon 100-400L IS @105mm f/4.5 1/160
I'm trying to work on simple graphic compositions, but don't (yet) have a good feel for what is simple-and-interesting, and what is simple-and-boring. Comments are welcome.
The building in this image was once part of a cotton mill dating from 1811. The complex has been transformed into a small shopping and office complex. I found it interesting that half of the building shown -- all of one long side, half of the front and half of the back -- has been painted a solid red, whereas the remaining half retains the raw bricks and mortar look (with what may be the remnants of a previous coat of white paint).

I started typing out my newly hatched rules of photography in response to your questions above. But it got so verbose I had to go and do it as a full blog post in its own right.
With all due respect (I think you are brilliant) this architectural shot doesn't work. While technically correct and remarkable in composition and content - it has no beauty, and therefore falls short. Go read my blog for the full story. I featured your glass houses as an example of one that does work. :)
I've been waiting to comment on this photo, while I mulled over my reaction to it. I think that the composition of the photo is nice enough and the symmetry is good, but I think it's lacking the right kind of light or something and so it's flat and a little uninteresting because of that. It doesn't have a whole lot of texture or color, I don't think...
I couldn't really decide whether and if I liked it, and I think that I don't dislike it. But it doesn't do a whole lot for me. Unlike your glass mountain photos which really wowed in terms of everything - composition, light, texture, and perspective.
It has definitely symmetry, but also a lot of elements that distract from the simplicity that you are looking for. There are a lot of elements in the windows that steals the attention from the abstract shapes. Have you thought of the same photo, but in an area without the windows? Just the changing texture of the wall?
I think this is great recognition of compelling graphic design on your part. Very interesting photo and perspective. Good shot.
Hi Visual-Field, your blog is excellent. As I was surfing around today looking for detailed info on photography senior I somehow ended up on your page. As your A House Divided is not exactly related to my search, I am certainly glad I stopped by. Oh well, back to surfing and I am sure I will find what I am looking for, and should you ever need information about photography senior, then stop by for a look. Thanks for the post.
Hi Visual-Field, I found your blog informative. While out blog surfing today for specific info on horse photography, I ended up on your page.
